Lasers Edge New York was founded in the summer of 2000 by a group of indoor players. Travelling to and from commercial indoor arenas to play Tag was very taxing on our cash funds. Also, a lot of the them were not kept up, and the equipment was more shoddy then stable. One day, while at a Toys R Us, we discovered Laser Challenge Laser Tag equipment. "Mere toys" we thought, until we got our hands on it from a family member. Next thing you know, Toys R Us was sold out of the equipment because we bought them all!
We found a few good "arenas" in the park nearby. More friends gathered together in an AIM chatroom and the name Lasers Edge was born. Due to our schedules we mainly played at night, which in NYC is a little risky. We have been stopped by the cops a few times, but once they found out we were harmless they allowed us to continue playing. Then West Nile Virus hit, and oh the fun we had with that. To date, none of us have ever gotten it, which is remarkable considerting one member was swarmed by mosquitos when he knocked into one of their "breeding pits".
In the 2002 season we were featured in the Yo Vinny! Production: LightSport™ The People, Business and Game of Laser Tag™ [Free Preview - Quicktime Movie]. We had just recently just won the East Coast Tag Con, hosted by the Maine IR Club in 2001. There were only two groups of outdoor taggers that attended the event. Just shortly after the tag con we had lost contact with the team from Maine. In 2003 the games started to fade due to scheduling conflicts of work, school, and outside priorities. As I recall, the 2003 never really "officially" happened, but since that year games have picked up once again.
In 2003, a few of us got together for a LAN party dubbed "October Frag." What began as a friendly get-together, quickly morphed into a gaming frenzy, as servers started poping up and almost every weekend we were playing games like Unreal Tournament, Call of Duty, and Neverwinter Nights. Some of us have even created original maps or modded existing maps for our various games. Lasers Edge has broadened its horizon in the last few years to become one of NY's unique gaming groups. The site itself has undergone some broad changes since its conception, in that it has become a "mini portal" for NY's gamers.
